Single crystalline LuAG fibers for homogeneous dual-readout calorimeters
نویسنده
چکیده
For the next generation of calorimeters, designed to improve the energy resolution of hadrons and jets measurements, there is a need for highly granular detectors requiring peculiar geometries. Heavy inorganic scintillators allow compact homogeneous calorimeter designs with excellent energy resolution and dual-readout abilities. These scintillators are however not usually suited for geometries with a high aspect ratio because of the important losses observed during the light propagation. Elongated single crystals (fibers) of Lutetium Aluminium garnet (LuAG, Lu3Al5O12) were successfully grown with the micropulling-down technique. We present here the results obtained with the recent fiber production and we discuss how the light propagation could be enhanced to reach attenuation lengths in the fibers better than 0.5 m.

Recent results on dual readout in calorimetry from the DREAM Collaboration
The energy resolution of the hadronic calorimeters is mostly limited by the fluctuation of the electromagnetic component in the development of the shower. The dual readout technique proposed by DREAM aims to correct event by event for this fluctuation measuring at the same time scintillation and Cherenkov light. In the last years the DREAM Collaboration has performed several tests to exploit th...
متن کاملCharacterization of 1800 Hamamatsu R7600-M4 PMTs for CMS HF Calorimeter upgrade
The Hadronic Forward calorimeters of the CMS experiment are Cherenkov calorimeters that use quartz fibers and 1728 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for readout. The CMS detector upgrade project requires the current Hamamatsu R7525 PMTs to be replaced with 4-anode, high quantum efficiency R7600-M4 PMTs. The new PMTs will improve the detector resolution, as well as the capability of removing fake eve...
متن کاملPreparation of LuAG Powders with Single Phase and Good Dispersion for Transparent Ceramics Using Co-Precipitation Method
The synthesis of pure and well dispersed lutetium aluminum garnet (LuAG) powder is crucial and important for the preparation of LuAG transparent ceramics. In this paper, high purity and well dispersed LuAG powders have been synthesized via co-precipitation method with lutetium nitrate and aluminum nitrate as raw materials. Ammonium hydrogen carbonate (AHC) was used as the precipitant. The influ...
متن کاملParticle Identification in 4th
The importance of particle identification Physics measurements often depend on the efficiency and the purity of an event ensemble, and the efficiency is a product of several small efficiencies for the isolation and identification of each event feature. The 4th detector has been designed from the beginning with particle identification in mind, knowing that we may be seeking small signals and tha...
متن کاملGlass Bead Calorimeter and Fiber Optic Readout
Large volume calorimeters are traditionally based on construction from high-density material or a “sandwich” construction of alternating layers of active and passive material. Dense scintillating material, made from materials such as BGO or lead-glass, is too costly to be used on a very large scale. In sandwich technology, energy resolution is often reduced due to a large fraction of the signal...
